June Feasts (Saint John's Feasts)

June, in Brazil,  is known as the "caipiras" feasts month! But, what is a "caipira"?

Well, it's a little difficult to translate but it can be understood as people from the rural area who usually live in ranches or farms!

So, June is a festive month full of parties in which people sing and dance the

"quadrilha" (an European dance which was brought to Brazil by the Portuguese

back in the XIX century),  gathering around fires, enjoying themselves with

gorgeous fireworks and hot air baloons and indulging themselves with special

food made of corn. These feasts are dedicated to the Catholic saints Anthony

(06/13), John Baptiste (06/24)  and  Peter (06/29). They take place

 throughout

the whole month, mostly at the Northeast of Brazil where there are two cities

very famous for their huge June  Feasts which are Caruaru (located at

Pernambuco State) and Campina Grande (located at Paraíba State). As a

matter of fact these special feasts are meant to celebrate the good harvest

 and the nice crops!

Now, as I live in a big city (Rio de Janeiro) I miss all this fun! This kind of

event needs open spaces to take place... And surely we can't have fires living in apartments... :o))

I miss spending the month of June in my home town...  I remember all the

children dressed up in their fancy dresses, straw hats and lots of laces! I also

remember the great fire right in front of my grandfather's house. I can still see

(or imagine) with my inner girl's eyes all the lights and little stars pruduced by

 the fireworks. Pure magic...

Now I want to share with you this special "caipira" recipe!

Granny's "canjica"

10 fresh corn cobs

1 cup of sugar

1 table spoon of butter

200 ml of coconut milk

powdered cinnamon

Mix the corn grains together with the coconut milk in a mixer. Then

add the sugar and the butter. Be sure to sieve this mixture thoroughly. If

you think it's still grainy don't be afraid of the strainer! Sieve it again

and again until the mixture is smooth enough.

Cook the mixture for approximately 30 minutes. It will be ready when you

see bubbles over the surface and when the mixture is getting loose from

the pan! Put the "canjica" in a plate and spread the powder cinnamon

over it!

All these feasts are enhanced by beautiful and specific songs which are composed just for these June events! The mid playing is one of them!

 It's called "Asa Branca".

Obrigada Lu!
