To the wild world of The Giant Panda!
|
I had a great time once, at
the
London Zoo, visiting one of the 100 or
so kept in captivity. In the wild
life, fewer than 1.000 specimens still exist. They are only found in the forest areas of west-central China. These areas were set aside by the Chinese government as nature preserves as the giant panda is classified as an endangered species due to human destruction of its forest habitat and poaching. |

An adult giant panda can weight up to 100 kilos, only feeding on bamboo! As it digestive system is carnivore, it isn't able to digest
cellulose, the main constituent of bamboo. That's why it has to spend almost 16 hours dayly feeding to obtain the nourishment it needs.

|
The family of a panda is quite small as a mother panda usually gives birth to only one baby in each pregnancy. The new born arrives very tiny, weighing about 100g! It will open its eyes about 45 days of age and will begin to eat bamboo at 5 months of age. But it won't live for a long time near its mom.. The Giant pandas live quite a solitary
life-style.

I decided to have a page on this subject ~ giant panda ~ just because I think they are adorable creatures but when we think about endangered species, we must also think about what "MEN", as a species, is doing to our planet... If we don't reconsider a lot of our behaviour habits, very soon the human being will be an endangered species
too!
