September, 11th, 2001 I woke up thinking it was going to be just another Tuesday, another sunny day in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil... Unfortunatelly, I was completelly wrong... Around 9:00AM the phone rang and my husband's voice asked me: "Are you watching the TV??" I wasn't so I turned the TV on and..... I just couldn't believe in what my eyes were seeing: the twin towers of The World Trade Center in fire.. Big flames, huge and thick smoke clouds... What could that be? A Hollywood's version of a nightmare? No,it was just reality... A terrorist attack! Two airplanes crashed into one of the most famous buildings on earth!! I still can't believe in what I saw.... Then, another airplane crashed into the Pentagon, Washington, DC... How many lives were lost? I don't know but even if there was just one life lost there is nothing, absolutelly nothing, that can justify such act of terrorism and violence.
This Tuesday might remain in our minds and hearts forever.. I do hope this tragedy will give us all the opportunity to consider peace as the most precious treasure that all our nations can have. It doens't matter if we are Brazilians, Americans, Frenches, Germanies or other countrie's citizens, what has to matter is that we are all human beings and we must find a way to reach and maintain peace! We are going to share all the human and economical consequences of this insane attack. We can't face anymore of these deadly happenings! We need peace! We must think of building a better world with wise decisions having as an aim that violence only brings more violence! We must find a solution to avoid more destruction and killings using intelligence and dialogue!! Wars bring more wars.... Peace should be a result of agreements not weapons!
I took this photo back in 1994 when I was visiting NYC... These towers will exist in my memory for as long as I live and I think they will turn out to be a symbol of a new world wide order: peace and solidarity amongst nations... May God have mercy on us!!
